Stewart family correspondence, 1861-1864.

Typed transcriptions of letters and a poem associated with the Stewart family. Included are a letter to Mr. and Mrs. Ben Stewart of Beaver Creek, Ala., from W.H. Clark, a soldier stationed near Manasas, Va., who boasts of the number and strength of Confederate forces arrayed there and the comparative weakness of opposing U.S. Army troops; a letter to Mary Stewart from L.B. Robbins, a member of Company E of the 25th Georgia Volunteers, who writes of homesickness and his state of health; and a letter by an unidentified minister's wife in Madison, Ala., who expatiates on the hardships of war, which she describes as a test of "the Christian character," and makes other observations of a homiletic nature. Accompanying the letters is a poem by Lawrence H. Mathews, a soldier in Company G of the 1st Florida Regiment, describing the hardships of a soldier's life and the solace that letters from home provide.
